A No-Guilt Way to Start Reading Scripture

Hands holding an open Bible during morning reading

Every January the same thing happens: thousands of us resolve to read the whole Bible, stall somewhere in Leviticus by February, and quietly decide Scripture "just isn't for us." Can I suggest the problem was never you? It was the plan.

Here's the rhythm we've shared with hundreds of people at Harvestgate — no guilt, no falling behind, no catch-up days.

One chapter, one verse, one prayer

Read a single chapter — start with Mark, not Genesis. Then choose one verse that stood out and read it twice more, slowly. Finally, turn it into a one-sentence prayer. Ten minutes, start to finish. That's the whole method.

Consistency beats intensity. Ten minutes most days will change you more than two hours once a month.

Miss a day? Nothing happens

Seriously — nothing. There is no streak to protect and no shame to carry. Just pick up today's chapter tomorrow. The Bible is not a race; it's food. You don't apologize to lunch for skipping it yesterday.

An open book with reading glasses and coffee — unhurried morning study

Read with someone

Everything sticks better in community. Grab a friend and text each other your one verse each morning, or join one of our midweek groups walking through Mark together this season. You'll be amazed what you notice when someone else is noticing with you.

Talk it over

  • What has tripped you up in past attempts to read the Bible regularly?
  • Which Gospel would you start with — and who could you invite to read along?
  • What would ten unhurried minutes with Scripture look like in your current routine?
